10 Mile Pony

Ambrose has NEW glued on boots.  We did about the same speed on the warm up down the canyon.  We kept the speed after the turn around at about 13 mph on the uphil.  Ambrose was doing well, we kept him at the trot with just a little canter here and there.  He did not turn into a butt until about the middle of the work, noting serious, just pulling and wanting to go faster.

5 Mile Pony, bad horse

1/30/2011

Ambrose had yesterday off.  He was fitted with his HR belt and we started off down the hill.  My plan was to do about 10 miles or so, 8 at the minimum.  Ambrose did quite well in the first mile down to the bottom.  After the turn around he really wanted to pick up the pace.  I let him pick it up a little, actually quite a bit faster then he had done before.  We cantered up the hill at about 15-18mph, he slowed a little bit as we went past the barn but did not have to drag him like I had to do a few times before.  Ambrose kept the pace at a fast trot and about 13mph on the downhill.  Ambrose was pulling like crazy making it hard to control the quad with one hand, the faster we went the faster he wanted to go.  I had my camera so decided to take a short video and slow him way down.  He was still pulling hard even though not going fast.  I looked down and noticed that he had lost his RR glued on boot at about 5 miles.  I had no idea where or when he had lost the boot, if we had been under saddle I think I would of noticed.  I had put a used pair of used boots on him to play with a different protocol of installing the boots.

Ambrose went back to the barn which was only 1 mile away, still pulling and acting stupid, going sideways etc..  The more fit they get the stupider they get, can't wait to ride him.  We have a long ride coming up on Tuesday at a place I have not been before.

I pulled his old boots and put new ones on, still playing with the gluing protocol.  Ambrose's body is changing, you can start to see more definition in his muscles, even through his winter coat.

Thinking back on how Ambrose was acting today, time will tell, but good possibility because of the speed that I let him go after his downhill warm up that he had a spleen dump, that would certainly account for his rowdiness...., I know that MONK will act that way.

6.5 mile Pony - Easy

I had to go to my neighbors down the road so decided to take Ambrose since he already had boots on, today is MONK's day, but it takes forever to get him ready.  Anyway watching the fly-by video you can actually see where I turned into his driveway.  Ambrose had already had breakfast so he was ready to go.  He did very well, stood nicely while I chatted with my neighbor.  He pony's quite well these days, he does end up pulling some and wanting to go faster at the turn around towards home.  He has a nice solid 15 mph trot, he won't be able to do this under saddle and it is not a big monstrous extended trot, he will usually kind of go back and forth from a nice slow canter to the trot at this speed.  We usually keep the speed at around 12 or 13, at least that is what the quad speedo says.  The speed we go kinda depends on his demeanor, the road, uphill or down and just a general feeling of how he is feeling.

We ended up doing 6.5 miles with 430 feet of elevation gain.. Hard to tell the average speed because of our visit with the neighbor.

Training Hill

Ride info:  59:10 Min, 6.61 miles, pace, 8:54 pace.

First ride in Glue on boots for Ambrose.  You could tell he liked them he moved great.  This actually is a very hard ride if you push the pace a little.  The uphills are not real steep but very long and consistent.  Sometimes we work just the uphill and walk down, today we worked both, uphill and down.  Ambrose has very good working Heart Rates, even when going fast.  He was 211 as we crested the hill and within 40 seconds he was 120, on the next pull he was 200 at the top and 120 in 30 seconds. We just turned around at the top and started troting back down.  On that last push up the 1 mile hill to home, Ambrose went 45 seconds to the first level spot, 15 seconds faster then the last time.  It also took him lots longer to recover, about 3 minutes down to 120.  Instead of 4 sprints we only got to do 3 waiting for him to recover after his first sprint.  We do a mile or so cool down walk after we get to the top and then off to the barn for his recovery mash..  This was one of those once every couple of week rides, I don't like to see recoveries after a hard run taking more then 20 minutes to return to 60.  Ambrose was not tired at all and not breathing hard but his HR were hanging so he was about 30 minutes...  I think a push like this is OK to do but maybe only every couple weeks or so.  What you might see is a big jump in his conditioning level.  Ambrose will probably get the next couple of days off.  The next ride we do will be quite a bit longer on less demanding terrain.

Glue on Boots and 6 mile Pony

Google Earth  -  Sky View of track

I love this feature.  If you stop the "follow the track"  you can use your mouse to pan up or down, move off the track to something else you might want to look at, play with it you will find it very interesting.  I will be doing more of these so you will have plenty of time to play...   ImapMyRun is a program that I have in my Iphone, I also use my Garmin 310xt but this is easier to put into the blog.

14:29 Duration, 3.03 miles, 12.8 mph average

Actually I recorded only the second loop, so we did this loop twice, but not as fast the first time.
